Blog 7 - Helmut Lachenmann - New Music and New Listener
The history of the composition, since Bach until our days converge in Helmut Lachenmann. The first time that I found me with him, invaded me a powerfull feeling and his new music opened my world. When you listen him for the first time is shocking and the first impression is "what the hell is this!". He has been highly criticized, because his music is considered very complex and demands the highest virtuosity of the interpreters.
He proposes to us a new way of listening where we must leave our state of comfort. What we understand of the music and the beauty is now questioned. The traditional music like popular music is worn and our spirits need new stimuli. His music is a existential experience, that leads us to the innermost part of our being. His music it made me cry like a Brahms´s symphony. Its full of contrasts; some moments lead you to a void or to a abyss, and suddenly its interrupted with a very powerful chilling chord, rising to the heavens. At the beginning, many orchestras didn´t want to play their music because they said that Lachenmann with his techniques hurt the instruments. Little by little, the most important orchestras in Germany and the world have incorporated their music. He uses a way of composing called "extended techniques" from which it extracts sounds never used before.
I recommend listening to the next (link below), and put play with your eyes closed. You must also leave your mind empty, think of nothing and no one. They can be stimulated with psychotropic drugs or simply with a glass of wine. And put play and feel the power of new music.
Allegro Sostenuto for clarinet, cello and piano
Parte I
Parte II

A very interesting entry, especially for those 'illiterate' musically speaking. Listening to Mr. Lachenmann's tunes are a such an experience that takes a while, a long while to digest!
